Il nome, abbreviato, del New York Standards Quartet rimanda all'intento di riproporre in chiave contemporanea i classici della tradizione jazzistica. La decennale esperienza concertistica e discografica cui allude il titolo del CD sostiene un interessante vocabolario armonico, con una grande attenzione per il dettaglio e la costruzione della frase solistica. Lo dimostra emblematicamente la swingante rilettura di "Lush Life" per riassumere l'essenza del jazz: comunicativa, swing, capacità di trasmettere profonde emozioni racchiuse nell'attimo irripetibile di ammalianti improvvisazioni estemporanee.

Alla luce di quanto detto, è davvero difficile sottrarsi alla squisita musicalità del New York Standards Quartet, dove si mettono in bell'evidenza anche in chiave compositiva il sassofonista Tim Armacost e il pianista David Berkman. Piace pure il piglio complessivo nell'approccio agli standard con rispetto della tradizione, colti approfondimenti e gustose digressioni che fanno di questo quartetto uno dei migliori gruppi di modern mainstream in circolazione.
